INTRODUCTION

The idea for this collection of vignettes came to me one day as I was thinking about all my own wonderful personal experiences in the front field at Borderwood. I realized many, many people, both Walker family and other friends and relatives, have their own stories to share about this 8-acre hay field, owned by the Walker family since at least 1837.
I decided to share some that I have experienced, some I have heard related over the years, and to solicit stories and pictures for Voices Across the Field.  Juan Arellano from New Mexico speaks of the term, “querencia”, which means “that which gives us a sense of place, that which anchors us to the land.” I feel that way about this farm field and the surrounding lands:  it helps to anchor us all, over the generations.

WALKER HILL FARM

Built in 1846, although the stable came over from the Menotomy Road some time years later, carefully disassembled and moved from the original Evans Farm.
